On Friday Nov 8th, members of Hautlieu’s Year 12 “PUBLIC SPEAKING” Enrichment class took part in the Rotary Club’s annual student Peace Debate in The States Chamber.
The debate was heard under the presidency of Mr Robert MacRae Deputy Bailiff of Jersey and was judged by Rotary Club President, Madeleine De La Cour and Rotarian lead of the Rotary Club of Jersey Peace Programme, Tony Allchurch. His Excellency The Lieutenant-Governor Vice Admiral Jerry Kyd was also in official attendance and gave an inspiring and thought provoking welcome address on this year’s topic.
The theme of this year’s debate was the Roman maxim, “IF YOU WANT PEACE, PREPARE FOR WAR” and student teams from 7 schools prepared and delivered a 5-minute speech, and answered 5 minutes’ worth of questions from the floor. Speeches ranged in propositions from Victoria College’s “Global Peace is dependent upon Mutually assured Destruction” and Beaulieu’s “Sometimes forms of conflict are necessary to facilitate peace” through to Quennevais’ examination, “Ukraine: Is the US involvement for Peace or Economic Gain?” and all 7 teams gave exceptionally well-researched and delivered addresses and tackled questions on their proposals with great knowledge and insight.
Hautlieu’s team (Zoe Lamont, Callum Brown, Tiago De Rosa, Chlodie Graham, Caleb Simon and Oliver MacReady) were delighted to be crowed winners of the best presentation for their speech entitled “International
Peace through Collaboration: A Delicate Balance” in which we assessed the efficacy of role of intergovernmental organizations in the delicate quest for lasting peace.
